November 2024
Almost 50 years ago I started my martial arts journey studying traditional karate. Meditation was part of my routine, but I did not routinely meditate. I focused much of my time on the fighting part of martial arts.
Spending 30 years in government service I had the opportunity to travel and study other styles and forms of combative arts. I meditated when I could, but it was never the focus of my efforts until I happened upon the writings of Taisen Deshimaru and Takuan Soho. They piqued my interest and made me realize I was missing something…. something internal that I could not quite describe nor fully grasp.
Over time I began to meditate more and study more writings related to meditation and Zen, and I came to realize that internal focus was what I was seeking….and that maybe I could become “enlightened” one day.
I don’t remember when I stumbled upon the Daily Zen website, but it has been a part of my study and routine for as long as I can recall. Every morning, I read the daily quote and meditate on it and its meaning.
It is like a friend who offers guidance without criticism. As time has passed, I realize that the study of Zen is not what you learn or do, but what you become and live.
